About the Book

For more than 30 years, I've been involved in various segments of the funeral industry, from the early days in my role as a funeral director to my more recent 11-year tenure as the executive director of the world's oldest and largest association of independently owned funeral homes. I have witnessed the confusion and discomfort that can exist for those responsible for arranging final tributes and services. Throughout my career, one basic concept has remained very clear informed purchasers of funeral services, as with any product or service, are far more likely to make decisions most appropriate for their unique personal needs and circumstances.

Unfortunately, the subjects of death and funerals are so discomforting for many people that they don't collect the information before the need arises. In addition, these decisions have become more confusing for many people due to contemporary factors, such as the distances that separate family members, the virtually unlimited options for personalization of funeral services, and the growing popularity of "green burial" alternatives, to name only a few. This guide is a source of objective and factual information. In it, I'll share information and insight about the many questions, decisions, and options facing those responsible for arranging tributes and funeral services for those they love. It is neither my wish nor intent to influence personal decisions about any form of final tribute. It is my goal to equip people with information that reduces the potential for miscommunication and regret, and lessens stress during what many describe as the most difficult time in their lives.

About the Author

George W. Clarke has more than thirty years experience in the funeral service industry, beginning as a funeral director/embalmer with a high volume, multi-location funeral home in Massachusetts, and ultimately serving as assistant general manager for the last five years of his thirteen-year tenure. During that time, he personally helped more than 1,000 families arrange appropriate tributes for people they cared about.

In 1991, he accepted a position on an international scale with National Selected Morticians (NSM), known today as Selected Independent Funeral Homes, the world’s oldest and largest association of independently owned funeral homes. In that capacity, he was responsible for the association’s Management Assistance Program, which provided funeral home management consulting services to the membership.
In 1996, Mr. Clarke was named the association's Executive Director and served in that capacity until August 2007. In that role he designed and implemented membership programs, national public relations campaigns, and legislative initiatives. In regular contact with association members throughout North America and abroad, he was often called upon to contribute his industry experience and expertise to help members resolve management issues and develop best practices. He has also participated in numerous meetings and conferences with representatives of the Bureau of Consumer Protection of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission regarding its regulation of the funeral industry.

Mr. Clarke has extensive experience in public speaking, has been interviewed by national television and radio outlets regarding funeral industry related issues, and has been quoted extensively in newspaper and magazine articles throughout the United States.
In addition, Mr. Clarke has served as a volunteer for the New England Organ Bank, is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Coalition on Donation (currently known as Donate Life America), and has also served as a volunteer with the Guest Engagement Department of the John G. Shedd Aquarium, Chicago, Illinois.

When Mr. Clarke recently addressed our Adventures in Lifelong Learning group at UW-Parkside, he detailed the essentials of funeral planning. His lecture was one of our best received and most interesting.

Later, when a close friend was dying, I relied on that complete and practical information to ease my anxiety and distress. My friend and her family were grateful for the advice I was able to pass on to them, and together, we created a beautiful and meaningful tribute. At the time, I wished I could have had a book to share with them.

I am thrilled to see that he has completed just that essential book. Mr. Clarke covers everything from consumers' rights to planning a funeral that will comfort the living and uniquely honor the deceased. He reminds us that since death often comes so unexpectedly, it is important to be prepared. In this practical and understandable guide, he stresses taking one's time in planning, something that most people think they cannot do. In the same calm, confident style of his presentations, he walks the reader through every step of planning. Reading this book is like having an industry insider hold your hand --it comforts and it eliminates confusion. Every Hospice organization should have this book on hand for families, and everyone can benefit from reading it. His book has already sparked several meaningful conversations with family and friends.

Nobody Wants To Talk About It edition by George W Clarke Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews

In immensely practical terms, Clarke discusses the "nuts and bolts" of arranging funerals. I especially like that this book is short and readable, filled with important details and devoid of lots of unnecessary "fluff." This book will be especially useful to hospice staff, hospital social workers and chaplains, parish clergy, and other caregiving professionals who regularly interface with families of the dying. In my own experience, these folks get little training on the basics of what families face when they leave our care--and this little book will surely be an asset in helping these helpers intensify abilities to help.
I enjoyed the way in which the book was written. It is concise, easy to follow and understand. It also contains lots of common sense information that is easy to read and comprehend. I especially enjoyed the section...and warnings...about "pre-need" plans.
George Clarke's new book is a must read for anyone contemplating a funeral or memorial service. George's expertise comes from many years in the funeral industry. He gracefully tackles a very difficult and sensitive subject none of us want to talk about but all of us need to learn about.

This book opened my eyes to and helped me realize I too needed to put some thought into planning a memorial service for myself so when the time comes my family would not feel the brunt and weight of this untimely burden.

George's book just makes plain sense. I would highly encourage anyone in the funeral industry to purchase a copy and share it with others. It will prove to be a great resource and asset to any firm, company or organization.

Lastly, thank you George for your commitment over the years towards helping others in need. I believe for many doors of opportunity to open to you this new year. Blessings from our family to yours.

Gratefully,
Larry R. Cappetto
